St Columba's College was an independent preparatory Marist college. It served as a (boarding and fee-paying) preparatory school feeder for Catholic boarding schools throughout the United Kingdom with links to St. Joseph's College, Dumfries and Ampleforth College. Emphasis was on religious instruction and character building. There was much insistence on discipline and achievement and academic standards were high. However, there was an ethos of severity under headmaster Brother Urban which did for the school's fortunes. The installation of the a headmaster, Brother Cyprian Edward in 1957, did little to rally the school's fortunes and it closed after 1982. There was little attempt to innovate compounded by an inability to recruit able graduates from the Marist order which contributed to the college's decline.
The school building originally named "Landour" is a category B listed building which has since been converted into apartments. The school building's name "Landour" was lost with the closure of the school. The school playing fields have been lost to developers and are now overlayed by a dwelling house estate on what is now Boathouse Drive.
